updated: 2025 — ACCEL Education & Migration, Putalisadak
Studying in the UK has always been a dream for thousands of students — but staying updated with immigration rules is just as important as your admission offer. The UK government (UKVI) has officially announced new financial requirements and Graduate Route visa changes that will affect international students from November 2025 and January 2027.
This post breaks down exactly what’s changing, when it starts, and what you can do to prepare — written simply, clearly, and directly for students and parents.
What’s Changing — and When
The new policy comes in two main phases:
🗓 Financial Requirement: Effective 11 November 2025
🗓 Graduate Route: Effective 1 January 2027
These updates impact how much money students must show in their visa applications and how long graduates can stay in the UK after finishing their studies.
Revised Financial Requirements (from 11 November 2025)
UKVI has increased the financial threshold international students must demonstrate when applying for a student visa.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Studying in London: £1,529 per month
- Studying outside London: £1,171 per month
- Students must show funds to cover 9 months of living expenses
- Accommodation offset: £1,529
What this means for you:
You’ll need to show higher financial proof before applying for your visa. Prepare your bank statements and sponsor letters early, especially if your course starts in late 2025 or beyond.
Graduate Route Updates (from 1 January 2027)
The Graduate Route visa, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after completing their degree, will also change.
Here’s what’s new:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates: Can stay in the UK for up to 18 months (previously 2 years).
- PhD graduates: Can remain for up to 3 years, same as before.
Tip: Always check if your course is eligible for the Graduate Route and confirm how long you need to study in the UK to qualify.
If you’re not eligible for the Graduate Route, you may still apply for other visa types — for example, a Skilled Worker visa — to stay longer in the UK.
How Long You Can Stay
Depending on when you apply, your stay duration will differ:
- If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, your Graduate visa lasts 2 years.
- If you apply on or after 1 January 2027, your Graduate visa lasts 18 months.
- If you have a PhD or doctoral qualification, your visa lasts 3 years.
Your visa officially begins from the day your application is approved.
Staying Longer in the UK
You cannot extend a Graduate visa once it ends. However, you can:
- Switch to another visa type (e.g., Skilled Worker visa).
- Explore employer-sponsored options after gaining UK work experience.
Tip from ACCEL: Always plan your next step early — whether that’s applying for jobs, internships, or advanced studies. Timing matters!
